Casablanca lily stems

Casablanca lilies are often used for occasions such as weddings or funerals because of their white color.

Casablanca lilies (Lilium "Casa Blanca") are oriental lilies with fragrant, pure white flowers. Oriental lilies are taller with larger blooms than other lily types. Casablanca lilies grow about 4 feet tall with 8- to 10-inch blooms appearing in late summer. Grown from tubers, the lilies are best planted in spring or fall. They do best in slightly acidic soil, and good drainage is essential. Casablanca lilies grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 through 10.

Test the soil pH before planting. Casablanca lilies prefer a slightly acidic soil pH of around 6.5. Add peat moss to lower pH if necessary. Dig compost into the top few inches of soil before planting.

Plant in a spot with full sun or afternoon shade. Casablanca lilies do best if the flowers are in full sun,but the bottom of the stem is in the shade. This can be accomplished by planting near shrubs or buildings. Plant in a raised bed with compost-amended soil if the native soil lacks adequate drainage.

Dig a hole 6 to 8 inches deep. Place the tuber at the bottom of the hole so the tip points up and the flat end points down. Cover the tuber with dirt. Space multiple lilies 12 inches apart. Keep the soil moist as the lily grows.

Fertilize the lilies with a 5-10-10 fertilizer according to the package instructions. Fertilize again each spring when new growth appears. Stake stems if they are in a windy area.

Cut spent blooms just below the flower to prevent the lily from developing seeds. Leave as much of the stem and leaves as possible to provide food for the tuber both when deadheading and when cutting flowers for the house.

Cut the stems back to the soil line in the fall after the lilies have stopped blooming. Cover the plant with a 4- to 6-inch layer of organic mulch to protect the tuber from winter frosts. Remove the mulch in the spring when the new growth appears and all frost danger has passed.

Lily's is good (lovely garden seating)

Joe's is a skip away and much better IMHO. Still, I really like Lily's. You said unique-these would both fit the bill. To add to the list: Mercedes Grille, Cafe del Rey, 26 Beach Cafe, and Casablanca. Latter is very decent, inexpensive mexican. Amazing combos for 6-7 dollars. Best part are the fresh tortillas (made on a grill in the restaurant) served w/ a salsa verde full of cheese and avocado. Complimentary. After two of these I usually have to take my lunch to go!
