Casablanca Lily Wedding

Casablanca Lily Wedding

Season: The majority of varieties of lilies are available pretty much all year long but the colors and actual varieties will vary by growing location.

Cost: Callas and mini callas generally start around $4 per stem from a florist and go up from there depending on the time of the year. Larger lilies like Stargazer and Casablanca will often be higher as they are larger and make more of an impact – don’t let a higher price tag let you rule them out as a little can go a long way!

Varieties: The most common varieties of lilies used in weddings are:

-Calla Lily: available in both regular and mini. Mini calla lilies are among the most commonly used variety in weddings. Both full sizes and mini callas are shaped similar to a trumpet. The minis come in lots of colors and are gorgeous as an accent or on their own. Regular size callas are sleek, sophisticated and lovely on their own!

-Oriental Lily: these lilies are the big ones. They are dramatic and come in lots of colors as well – Stargazer and Casablanca are two of the more common types.

Colors: White, pink, green, yellow, red, purple/black, rust and orange depending on the variety of lily you are using.

Hardiness: Calla lilies can be out of water for some time and still be fine. Many of the Oriental blooms also last very well out of water or in the heat. Lilies are generally a nice choice for a hot weather wedding.

Pairings: Callas are a fantastic base flower – easily blending with roses, hydrangea, orchids, you name it. Other varieties of lilies are less easy to blend. A stargazer lily doesn’t blend, it stands out – its color and size doesn’t lend too well to being subtle.

Good Things to Know: If you get any pollen on your dress or a table cloth, use tape to remove it – DO NOT RUB! If you rub it, it will stain – if you touch lightly with a piece of scotch tape, it will lift. Casablanca lilies have a very distinctive smell – if you have someone allergic to flowers, they could be a problem.

Joe's is a skip away and much better IMHO. Still, I really like Lily's. You said unique-these would both fit the bill. To add to the list: Mercedes Grille, Cafe del Rey, 26 Beach Cafe, and Casablanca. Latter is very decent, inexpensive mexican. Amazing combos for 6-7 dollars. Best part are the fresh tortillas (made on a grill in the restaurant) served w/ a salsa verde full of cheese and avocado. Complimentary. After two of these I usually have to take my lunch to go!
