White poppies Peace Vancouver

"many choose a white poppy because for them it symbolizes peace in a violent world". I think that wearing a peace poppy makes the most sense for me since I've felt weird about wearing my red poppy for the last few years. Last year, I made this one and that felt a little better. This year, I've gone all the way. I do 'get' it, I understand why some people might think it's dis-respectful but also that the whole controversy seems a little ironic to me, since the white poppiers are all about peace and the red poppiers seem to be picking a fight with them. Red poppies are for peace and freedom now too, apparently. It seems like the red poppy campaign can change the meaning of their symbol but have left no room for others to do the same. The white poppy has been around for as long as the red poppy and its popularity is growing.

This is a simple fun craft, for us it was easy and fast enough to make 24 in an hour or so. d maybe you could skip the ridiculous controversy. As for the red-poppiers, I'll decide how I'll 'remember' thank-you.

So this Sunday, enjoy the ceremonies (if you participate) or at least having the day off and remember your way! With a white poppy, red poppy, or none at all. Besides, it's just a symbol. You decide what it means for you.

You will need:

white or off-white cotton material (cut into ~2x10" strips)

black fabric scraps (cut into a nickel-sized circle)

751. The Scholar-Gipsy
GO, for they call you, Shepherd, from the hill;
Go, Shepherd, and untie the wattled cotes:
No longer leave thy wistful flock unfed,
Nor let thy bawling fellows rack their throats,
Nor the cropp'd grasses shoot another head. 5
But when the fields are still,
And the tired men and dogs all gone to rest,
And only the white sheep are sometimes seen
Cross and recross the strips of moon-blanch'd green;
Come Shepherd, and again begin the quest
